Goldoni’s La famiglia dell’antiquario (also titled La suocera e la nuora) centers on Count Anselmo Terrazzani, an elderly collector obsessed with antiques who squanders the dowry that his merchant daughter-in-law’s father provided. Swindlers like his servant Brighella sell him worthless pieces at high prices, while his proud wife Isabella feuds with their bourgeois daughter-in-law Doralice, and their son Giacinto dares not displease his mother. In the end, Doralice’s father Pantalone, the one sensible man in the house, takes control from the count, stops the senseless spending and restores peace, a comic image of the nobility’s decline and the rise of the middle class.
